A day in the life of a secondary pupil

9:00 Pupils arrive to school

Pupils are greeted at the school gate by their 1:1 tutor alongside their teacher or supervisor. Pupils arrive with parents or with escorts in taxi’s. Pupil’s always arrive to school with a smile

9:15 Morning registration

Every morning pupils join their classmates for a group session to begin the day. Pupils ‘sign’ in to school and learn about topics such as days of the week, dates, weather, and seasons.

9:30 Phonics Sessions

All pupils have allocated time daily to work on their phonics targets. This may be done 1:1 or in a group as appropriate. Pupils access phonics through an adapted Read, Write, Inc program to guide their learning.

9:50 Intensive Trial Teaching (ITT)

Pupils access structured learning sessions with their 1:1 support. These table-top learning sessions facilitate the learning of specific, broken-down skills which may include labelling, following instruction, matching, answering questions, imitating other movements, echoing or sorting. Targets taught in these sessions are individualised based on assessment results. Pupils progress is continually monitored to ensure they are making consistent progress

10:15-10:45 Snack and Play time

Pupils are supported in independence skills related to preparing, eating, and tidying up their snack as appropriate. Pupils are given the opportunity to engage in preferred activities and games either 1:1 or in a group

10:45 Maths

Pupils will access a maths session either 1:1 or in a group as appropriate working on targets from Snowflakes Maths scheme of work. Snowflake School uses Numicon to support learning within maths concepts.

11:15 Self-Help

All pupils have specific self-help targets in place to increase their independence within daily living skills. Targets make include washing hands, brushing teeth, preparing food etc. Self-help skills are identified alongside the schools occupational therapist

12:00 Lunch

Pupils are supported in independence skills related to preparing, eating, and tidying up their snack as appropriate. Pupils are given the opportunity to engage in preferred activities and games either 1:1 or in a group

13:00 Reading

All pupils have dedicated time to build on their reading skills and love of books. While some pupils may be working on reading passages and comprehension others are focused on enjoying books being read to them or learning to turn a page.

13:15 Attention Autism

Pupils access attention autism sessions daily which aim to engage attention, improve joint attention, develop shared enjoyment in group activities and increase attention in adult-led activities.

13:30 Natural environment teaching (NET)

Through motivating, engaging activities pupil learn to request using their preferred communication method. Pupils also generalise skills learnt during intensive trial teaching into the natural environment.

14:00 Music Therapy

Pupils enjoy accessing weekly music therapy sessions either 1:1 or in a group with our qualified music therapist. Each pupil is given the opportunity to explore different instruments, rhythms, beats, and songs.

14:20 Physical Development

Pupils join in a group session that focuses on building their physical development. Pupils enjoy engaging with different games and activities while working on important skills such as sharing and turn taking with their peers.

14.45 Circle Time

Pupils join their classmates for an end of day group session. Pupils review what they have achieved during the day and enjoy singing songs while working on important group skills. Pupils learn to ‘sign out’ of school and say ‘goodbye’ to their classmates.
